Unexpected dinner with family | Outfit

top - primark | jeans - H&M | sandals - primark | belt - Vero Moda
A nice family dinner at a local restaurant to have dinner one last time before everyone is leaving on holiday :) It was a warm night, so cardigans or jackets were not needed.

What's in my bag? | Holiday Edition

I want to start doing more tags on my blog, starting today!
Let's start of with my bag :) I bought a new one for this holiday since I will be going on and off trains a lot. This is the second backpack I own, I am more of a one-shoulder person. (I did read this can affect your back and posture, so I am trying to us this one more.
It's by Dakine, and hold 15L.

The next things in my bag are magazines, a book and a notebook. This is not only for when I am on the train, but also for when on holiday and for the flight back home. I always take a notebook with me, just in case or if I need to write down something. (Or make lists, LOVE doing that) I don't really take a lot with me when it comes to reading, because we always do a lot during the day, so it's nice to be able to relax when you're home.

Another thing I enjoy, food :D There is not really a lot to say about food, besides that you need to eat and on a four hour train journey, you may need a lot! My train is leaving around lunchtime, so I will be making lunch and taking  it with me. A bottle of water, and some mints are always in my bag, no matter where I go. I have been trying to drink more water, and with a 0,75ML bottle it makes it a bit easier. (you don't have to refill it so much)

Lastly, a pocket mirror, my glasses, a few pens, my ID and Health Service Card, tissues and a little make-up bag filled with mascara, consealer, eye lash curler, chaptstick, hair grips and hair bands.

Packing Tips

When packing my bags for summer holiday, which I tend to do weeks before actually leaving, I always over-pack. This summer, for a change, there is no option for me to over-pack... I will be going on the train from Brussels to Lyon, carrying my own bags, and will be spending my first week camping with my friend and her parents. After camping my friend and I are taking a train to Italy to spent a week there with my parents. After a pizza eating filled week, we will be flying back home, AKA: checking in luggage and all.
As I am starting my vacation solo, there is no possibility for me to over-pack.

SO: Google became my best friend last week and helped me (along with the book 'Style' by Lauren Conrad) to make a check list of the things I would be needing. And most importantly, what not.

I decided to share my favourite tips with you and add a little bit of my own experiences as we go :)

Tip #1: Roll up your clothing
This will not only save space, it also leaves your clothing less wrinkly. Beware: this tip does take some practice. I have tried rolling my clothes for this summer holiday, but I have found it to be very frustrating because not all clothes are fit for rolling. I recommend trying it a few times before actually having to pack to see if it works for you. Another tip: Roll your clothes separately. (I first rolled up all my tops as one big roll, I found this to be a, let's say, not so useful way to try and keep my bag organized.)
Not this way, but roll up each shirt on it's own. (This will save you more space and will help with keeping your bag organized.)
Tip #2: Create your outfits before leaving.
This way, you will not pack things you will not be able to wear and will show that you can make a lot of different outfits with a few basic pieces. I read that taking pictures of the outfits also helps because you can check if you have used all the items you plan on taking with you. If you didn't, and you are happy with the outfits that you've created, you can leave the other things behind.
Like so. You can also wear the outfit and take a picture of it.
Tip #3: A zip-lock bag around your washcloth
Putting a zip-lock bag around towels or your washcloth is to protect the other clothes or products that you carry around in the same bag. You might have a afternoon-flight, but want to wash your wash after you wake up. The washcloth takes time to dry, but by putting it in a zip-lock, it keeps the water in there and will not spill on your other clothes. Using a normal plastic bag can lead to leaking. You can also use disposable cloths, but I find my skin getting red and irritated when I do.
The bag prevents leaking water on other clothes you carry in the same compartment.
Tip #4: Hair grips on the package
I never thought off keeping the packaging of new products. Until I needed a box to put my make-up in for when I was travelling, and I had just bought a new cream. I used the box to store my make-up, and still use it today! I keep the 'package' of my hair grips because it prevents me from losing my hair grips (I still lose them, but not in a few weeks time). I find this easy to use to put in my handbag or my make-up bag, because it doesn't take up much space and you still get to take all your hair grips with you. And most importantly: It prevents the grips from getting lost in your bag.

Tip #5: Take a few 'summer' nail polishes with you
I am a big believer of completing an outfit with nail polish. If I have the time, I change my nail polish every day or every other day. This summer, I wanted to get a lot of pastels, but couldn't find the right colours... I did pick up the blue one (pictured below). Other than two pastel colours (purple and blue) I always take one neutral color with me (in this case, white) and a bright one (pink).  For my toes I use a dark blue with a light shimmer. It lasts me all summer, so I put it on the day before I leave and don't take it with me. IF it does chip, I take it off and leave my nails or put on the neutral colour.
Sephora Pink #19 - W.I.C by Herome #149 Rabat - Essie #1 Blanc - Maybelline Color Show #651 Cool Blue
Tip #6: Put big packaged products together. Do the same with small products.
I always lose my mascara when I put it in the same bag as my body lotion. I put my hair products, make-up removers, body lotions and scrubs in a big bag. Then use another, smaller bag for my make-up products like mascara and concealer (I put my hairgrips in this bag as well). I spent less time searching through my bags and more time enjoying the sun!! I also put my bigger bag in my normal bag, and my smaller one in my handbag.

Tip #7: Empty toilet rolls for chargers
My bag has no side pockets, so I have no 'special' place to stall my chargers. I was scrolling trough Pintrest when I saw this as a storage idea. Of course, the rolls on Pintrest were pretty and creative, mine are not. You roll up your charger and pull it trough the roll. Your wire will not knot itself, and you can even use your charger when it's still rolled in the toilet roll.
If you have all black wires, you can use a black water proof maker to write down what the charger is for.
Tip #8: If you are taking your 'professional' camera with you, pack all belongings together.
I am only taking my Lumix camera with me this year. I also have a smaller Fujifilm camera, but the pictures are becoming blurry and it's running out of battery really fast... As I got this for my birthday/graduation, I got accessories, a second lens and super charger (it charges twice as fast, if we must believe the packaging). I have put all my camera belongings together in my camera bag, honestly, because I am too scared to lose anything! If you do have a special bag, I recommend taking full advantage because you have all your camera-stuff together!

Hope you enjoyed the tips! I found them via Pintrest on 'Her Packing List' the have loads of pins and boards for traveling :)

A Gap Year | Part 2: Decisions

Hi everybody :)
A month ago I posted my first 'Gap Year' post. In this post it is pretty clear that I was not sure of anything at that moment, and that I felt like a failure because of this. As I was writing it, I was not planning on making another post about my year until next year, but I figured I wanted people to be able to read about what I am going through because it might help them!

A month later, the tables have turned and I have found what I will be devoting my time to. Or where. I am going to be flying to Australia in the beginning of 2014, and will be spending around 10 months living in a host family and going to High School.
Starting from the top! I have always wanted to go out of my little country when I was done with school, but I never thought I would get the money together to actually go.

I cancelled the course I had applied for, and they were shocked when I told them I was going to take a year off. Everybody was when I told them, my family, teachers, co-workers and even some of my friends. 'You're wasting your life', 'It doesn't help your future', 'you'll be a year older when you start school, so a year older when you're done. No company wants you if you're old'. Or 'Why would you want to leave the country, we have everything a person needs and wants' were some of the things that were said to me.

And yes, there is a truth in all of them. I will be older, but wiser and I will know what I want to study and do with my life. It does help my future because I will become more independent and have 'international experience' (which a lot of companies want).

Anyways, after letting everybody know and getting used to the idea, I started on my list... and didn't really go that far :)
The first thing on my list: Leaving. My first choice was America, but I figured 'If you leave, you have to really leave'. America is far, yes, but you can fly back in 10 hours. Australia? 2 days. And I want to know what is happening on the other side of the world!

So I found an organization. They had a lot of information on their website and I was able to chat with them if I had other questions. I really liked them! And it got me excited to leave :)

I was getting used to the idea of leaving home and going to Australia. My dad, on the other hand, was not. He had to think about it (and the price-tag) for a few weeks longer. I had told him I wanted to go to High School there, to figure out what I wanted, but also to stay in school. He found it was no use...

A few weeks later, two weeks ago, he agreed. I WAS ALLOWED TO GO. For a whole year, to Australia, to go to High School. I could now dive into the applying process :) A day later I had applied and sent everything in. (this was on a Sunday) Monday, my spirit was pulled down when I received a phone call from the organization, telling me they couldn't let me go because there was no spot available. There were other options: New Zealand, or going for 5 months (but going on the waiting-list, still not being sure to leave).

I sat down with my parents, and we decided to look for another organization. Meanwhile, they were going to ask their partner if there was a way to still let me go.
We found a new organization, and they had a place available. I applied for their program, but was still hoping the first organization would be able to let me go.

Ever since applying for the second time, I am sure of going to Australia. The organization I would be going with was yet to be decided.

We didn't hear back from the first until this Tuesday. They unfortunately were not able to let me go. Meaning I will be leaving with the second. (Or being put on the list and not knowing if I would end up leaving. The decision here was not really hard).

Either way, this doesn't make me any less excited, and it's all I really think and talk about! (I am leaving for a two week vacation this Sunday, but am already planning my Australia trip) I am so happy that in the end, I am going. Because I was quite scared this wouldn't work out when I got the call on Monday. Thankfully, I will be leaving and am already planning and reading tips and tricks from other students.

I hope you enjoyed it and I will keep you guys updated :) If you are in the same boat as I was a month ago: try to talk to someone and think about what you want to do. It will help, more than those tests on the internet. And look around, what other people in your family or at your school are going to study or plan on doing! You can also ask me if you need someone to talk to :)

Summer 2013 | Lookbook

Another summer post! As this blog is about fashion and beauty, let's stick with that for this post :)
Last week, I took advantage of the amazing weather and shot a few looks I am wearing this summer. Enjoy!

Shirt - Primark & Short - Forever 21. As you can see in the picture,
the short folds very quickly, ironing only works on a high temperature.

Top - HEMA & Skirt - Forever 21. I would wear this for anything.
The skirt is a thin fabric and flows very nicely in the wind. I wear this with a nice cardigan
or blazer. I tend to wear long necklaces with it, ending just above the skirt.
Top - TopShop & Short - GAP. I like wearing crop tops they tend to be very thin,
which is nice in summer and are (most of the time) long enough to still look decent ;)
I would wear this to dinner, a nice top but not too hot. I also close all buttons and put on a necklace,
making the look a bit more fancy. Wearing a big, catchy ring will give it an extra 'fancy boost'
Sweater - H&M & Short - GAP. This is an outfit to wear later on the day, when it's a little colder.
The sweater is not very thick which makes it good for evening wear.
Dress - Forever 21. I like to wear this dress later on the day or when I'm going to the beach.
You can dress it up or just wear it like pictured. I like to wear this with a big short necklace and a
lot of bracelets. For daytime I pair it with sandals, at night with high heels.

Best Song Ever

Hi everyone!
This post will be a little different than other posts on this blog. A few days ago, I stumbled upon something that really caught my attention and I decided to just do it! It was from the 1D site, telling all bloggers to write about their 'best song ever' because of their new single (coming out on July 20th). They will post the best entries on their site :)
I have a blog, I love writing AND I have a song that takes me down memory lane, so why not?!

Here is what I sent in:
My best song ever is 'No One' by Alicia Keys. When I was twelve, I heard this song for the first time whilst in class. We were practicing for our school musical and needed to get our voices warmed up for all the songs we were going to be rehearsing that day. My teacher told us she had a 'challenging song' but our class (consisting of 15 boys and 10 girls) took it on. After singing it a few times, it actually sounded good! (And we had fun singing it) We used this song every time to warm up and we even sang it at our last performance. It became 'our' song.
This is my best song EVER, because in this year the whole group became one, and all small cliques were gone. There was no more bullying each other, and everybody accepted each other. This song reminds me of all the fun we had in that year, such as field trips or watching movies at someone's house. At the end of the year our teacher hosted a BBQ, and even though we didn't have school anymore and summer had already started, we sang that song all night! It also reminds me of some of the not so fun things we had to deal with that year, e.g. a mother of a friend of mine had to go to jail because she was involved in a crime. This really brought us together, and we supported her and helped her with everything she needed.

It brings me back to a year filled with laughter, joy, friendship and being able to relax when school was stressful.

Let me know in the comments below what your 'best song ever' is!

Birthday!!!

Summer has started, and my birthday was coming faster and faster!
There was cake, music, and family. I got to test my new toy (a brand new Panasonic Lumix G5) which I got earlier that morning.
We ordered my cake a few days before, and told the bakery to 'do something fun'. They did an amazing job and the cake was delicious!

I also had a good time seeing most of my family again, seen as some were on a holiday, and catching up with them after being busy with school and graduation.

Below are some pictures I took with my new camera! (all the filters are on the camera, no Photoshop was used for this post)

As if one party wasn't enough, I  hosted another 'get together' for my friends the day after my actual birthday (with a delicious birthday dinner).

A great way to celebrate!!!

Outfit: Shirt - C&A / Short - GAP

Monthly Favourites | June

There are not a lot of favourites for this month, because I have been relaxing in the sun and reading for most of this month. Besides London at the beginning of this month and my Graduation at the end, there have not been many occasions I got to play dress up.

Anyway, let's get started!
Heat starts at 60°

The first favourite is my new straightener! After deciding to take a year off, I wanted to change my hair. I got side bangs and the new do requires some effort... According to my hairdresser, it was needed to straighten my hair every day to make it look good. Now, I had a straighter, but it wasn't doing it's job very good anymore. I bought this one and I've been liking it so far! This one is a 'ThermoCeramic Slimline' one, with a coating to protect your hair. (As visible in the pictures, this coat burns and turns brown. You can remove it, but the coating will be gone.) If you are not a morning person, like me, this straightener will work for you! I straighten my hair at night, sleep with it, and find my hair still straight in the morning :) (Some mornings, I need to re-straighten some places, but that doesn't take me longer than 10 minutes). I have fairly thick hair, and I straighten my hair in 40 minutes (my old one took me 2 hours). After straightening my hair, it stays in for around 3 days without washing.
I spray this in my hair after showering, then blow-dry my hair and straighten it after.

With my straightener, I bought a heat protection stray to feel less guilty about damaging my hair. The one I picket up protects your hair up to 200 degrees, as high as most straighteners go. With using the protection spray, your hair will become more oily. When I use the spray, I leave it in for two days, showering at the end of the second day.

My next favourite is a little bit random... Another change this month was my eyes. (No, I didn't get new glasses...) I got an eye infection, and it caused me to lose sight at my right eye. My eyelid was swollen and I had a terrible itch. Thankfully, I had this before, so I had some leftover cream to calm it down.
This time the infection was caused by my lack of make-up removal. I have been lacking removing my make-up when I was watching movies till late and basically fell asleep on the couch, continuing to snooze in my bed. Lesson Learned: Always remove make-up, even if tired or half asleep.

I bought #15
Staying with the eyes, a favourite I have been using everyday of this month, whether I was going out or not, is the FIT ME concealer by Maybelline. I have seen a lot of people from across the globe rave about this, but wasn't able to purchase it in my country up until the first week of June. I did, and it works amazing. I am really self-conscious about my dark under-eye circles, and I have been feeling a lot better when I have this on. It doesn't work wonders, but it does make my face look more awake in the morning, and more fresh and clean during the day. Another positive about this concealer is that you do not need a lot to conceal your dark circles. When first applying it, I swept the brush over the whole length of my dark circles, but as I started using it more, I found that with a lot less, it gives the same effect and it becomes easier to blend it into the rest of your make up (or skin tone on days without any make-up)

Summer 2013 | Tie Dyeing

Summer has officially started, and what better way to start it by making something unique!! I have been wanting to make my own tie dye shirt for a few years now, but wasn't sure on how and when to do it. Somehow, my past summers have been filled with things more important...

But, I am getting my diploma in a few days, meaning I no longer have that to worry about that! When I told my friends I wanted to make the shirts, they were excited and wanted to make one themselves :)

So, after getting all the goodies (which was a lot more than I thought I would need), we looked up some video's on YouTube (what is there not to find on the internet!!) looking for patterns and a step-by-step guide.

TIME TO START CRAFTING!!!

White T-shirts, sprayed with water

We had four different dyes in the colours bright pink, bright green, blue and yellow. We added water to the dyes and put the dye on sections off the shirt, creating the patterns.

All the shirts were dyed and put in foil to set the paint. The time depends on the kind of paint you use.

The ones we used were from 'DecorFin Textile'

It did get a little messy...
We waited for the dye to dry. After washing the left over paint out, we hung the shirts.

THE RESULTS
